Resin - From Plastic Jewelry to High End Interior Design
With its humble beginnings as plastic jewelry, resin/plastic has come a long way to include everything from countertops to furniture to flooring and is now a part of the high-end interior designer's repertoire. Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It is a thermosetting resin, formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. It was developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1907. Original Bakelite jewelry is still available but it is not cheap! The stack of Bakelite Bracelets shown below sells for $6250 at 1st Dibs.
